Northern Westchester communities to benefit from federal grant
Astorino seeks additional volunteers

An initiative that connects seniors, the disabled and home healthcare workers with
transportation has received renewed federal funding that will allow it to expand its reach into
new areas of Westchester and continue operations through March 2017.
RideConnect, a program run by Family Services of Westchester and supported in part by
the county's Department of Senior Programs and Services, mostly operates in northern
Westchester, where access to public transportation is limited.

Individuals can utilize RideConnect to schedule rides for medical appointments,
shopping, cultural events, hairdresser appointments and errands. Transportation is provided by
volunteers or the RideConnect bus.

"RideConnect has become a popular and successful program," said County Executive
Robert P. Astorino. "The need for volunteers is growing, and I encourage people who are
looking for a way to help our seniors to reach out to the RideConnect team."
People age 21 and older in all Westchester communities who are interested in
volunteering should contact program director Karen Ganis at (914) 864-0955 or

The additional funding of $1.43 million over a three-year period from the U.S.
Department of Transportation comes at a time when demand for RideConnect is growing rapidly.
In 2012, RideConnect provided 1,000 referrals, whereas that number jumped to more than 6,000
in 2013.

The service originally operated in Bedford, Lewisboro, Mount Kisco, Pound Ridge,
North Salem, North Castle and Somers. The additional funding will enable the program to
expand into Cortlandt, Ossining, Peekskill, Yorktown and New Castle. RideConnect also has a
database of volunteers who can offer rides in other parts of Westchester as well.

To arrange for a ride, call RideConnect from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, at (914)
242-7433. With advance notice, rides can be scheduled on weekends as well. Rides can also be
requested on the RideConnect website at
